Mental health has been a bit of a Cinderella subject for many years, overlooked and underestimated. But just like Cinderella, it’s high time that mental health took centre stage and received the attention it deserves. And this is particularly true for us living in the sunny yet complicated nation of South Africa.

Why? Well, life in our beloved country can be as challenging as it is rewarding. Our unique historical, political, and socio-economic context often means that mental health issues are more prevalent and complex. However, one shouldn’t despair, because there are plenty of strategies and resources available to help us navigate these often choppy waters.

  1. Know the signs. The first step in managing mental health is recognising when you or a loved one might be struggling. Symptoms can vary greatly, from persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety to more physical signs like a change in eating or sleeping habits. Educate yourself and your family on these signs and don’t hesitate to seek help if you suspect something is amiss.
  2. Keep talking. In many South African cultures, discussing mental health issues is a bit of a taboo. But the reality is, we all have mental health just like we all have physical health. Some days it’s great, and on others, it’s less so. So, break down those barriers and start the conversation with family, friends, or even colleagues. You might be surprised at the support and understanding you receive.
  3. Access resources. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is a fantastic resource that offers free support and resources to anyone in need. They offer counselling, crisis intervention, and a wealth of information on all aspects of mental health. So, don’t shy away – reach out and make use of these resources.
  4. Invest in self-care. This doesn’t mean splurging on a fancy spa day (although, if you can afford it, why not?). It means investing time and energy into activities that help you feel good. This could be anything from taking a stroll in one of our stunning national parks, reading a good book, or having a lekker braai with friends. The point is to do something that relaxes and rejuvenates you.
  5. Consider professional help. Mental health professionals are there for a reason – they are trained to help us manage our mental health effectively. There’s no shame in seeking professional help, and often it can make a world of difference. Most medical aids in South Africa do cover mental health support to varying degrees, so don’t hesitate to explore this avenue.
  6. Stay active. Regular physical exercise is not just good for your body, it’s also fantastic for your mind. Whether it’s a brisk walk on the Sea Point promenade, a jog in the Drakensberg, or a dance class in downtown Jozi, find an activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.

Remember, mental health is not a destination, but a journey. And it’s a journey that is often best navigated with the help of others. So, let’s break the silence, shatter the stigma, and start taking care of our mental health, just as we do our physical health. Because as South Africans, we’re known for our resilience, our ubuntu, and our ability to come together in the face of adversity. And together, we can navigate the world of mental health, one step at a time.
